What is the purpose of serology testing for COVID-19?
Serologic tests can identify individuals who have had contact with the virus and have developed an immune response against the SARS-CoV-2 virus (that causes COVID-19).
Note: serologic tests should not be used as the sole basis to diagnose an active infection.
The only method recommended for that purpose remains the PCR test (using a nasopharyngeal swab), which allows for detection of the SARS-CoV-2 genome.

Is a medical prescription required for serology testing?
A medical prescription is not required for the serologic tests.
Does the CNS reimburse the serologic test?
At this time, the serological test is still not reimbursed by the CNS.

Is fasting necessary prior to serological testing?
There is no need for fasting beforehand.
What are the limitations of the serologic test?
Serologic tests allow for identification of individuals who have been probably exposed to the virus and have developed an immune response directed against the SARS-CoV-2 virus, that causes COVID-19.
However:
- Serologic tests do not shed light on how contagious those individuals may be or on their immunity level.
- The production time of antibodies against the virus is still not well defined, especially in asymptomatic individuals.
It is thus important that you keep following the health precautions.
